Luxury Maldives Holidays
One country. A thousand different versions of paradise.
From above, the Maldives can look wonderfully simple: tiny islands, white sand and an almost impossible shade of blue.
But spend enough time here and you realise that no two islands feel quite the same.
One has the reef we’d choose. Another has the better beach. One is brilliant with little explorers, while another is somewhere we’d disappear to without them. Some are all about barefoot simplicity; others are about extraordinary restaurants, beautiful design or having almost nothing around you at all.
At Willow & Bird, we create luxury Maldives holidays by finding the island that suits the way you want to experience the Maldives.
Because choosing the Maldives is the easy part.
Choosing your Maldives is where we come in.
Beach villa or overwater villa?
The overwater villa has become almost synonymous with a Maldives luxury holiday.
And sometimes we’d absolutely book one.
But don’t overlook the beach.
A beautiful beach villa can give you more privacy, more usable outdoor space and the rather lovely experience of opening your door and walking barefoot straight onto the sand.
With younger children or a bigger group, it’s often where we’d start. For a honeymoon, we might think completely differently.
And sometimes we’d recommend splitting the stay and give you both experiences
We don’t choose the villa that photographs best. We choose the one we’d actually want to stay in.
We’d choose the beach more often than you might expect.
A beautiful hotel isn’t enough
Is the beach actually as good as the photographs?
What’s the reef like — and how easily can you reach it?
Which side of the island would we want our villa on?
Will ten nights feel blissfully slow or slightly too long?
Are there enough restaurants we’d genuinely want to eat in?
Would we pay for the overwater villa?
And when the seaplane arrives to take us home, will we wish it hadn’t?
“I ask myself, when it’s time to leave, would I want one more day?”
The resorts our clients are always returning to
-
There isn’t one — and that’s rather the point. The best Maldives resort for a honeymoon may be completely different from the one we’d recommend for a family or someone passionate about diving. We match the island to you rather than working from a generic “best hotels” list.
-
Both can be wonderful. Overwater villas offer the quintessential Maldives experience, while beach villas can provide exceptional privacy, space and direct access to the sand. We’ll tell you which we’d choose at the particular resort you’re considering.
-
It depends on the journey and resort. For some travellers, seven nights is perfect; others will happily disappear for two weeks. We also sometimes split a stay between two islands or combine the Maldives with destinations such as Sri Lanka or the Middle East.
-
Absolutely. The right resorts offer exceptional family accommodation, kids’ clubs and experiences. Through Little Explorers, we pay particular attention to villa layout, water safety, transfers, dining and the practicalities of travelling with babies and young children.
-
We know that choosing the island is only the beginning.
We can advise on villa location, dining and upgrades, review restaurant menus, suggest experiences worth making time for and help with the journey to and from your island.
We can also introduce you to hotel privileges and insider options, including VIP airport and private-terminal experiences where available.
Everyone goes to Soneva Jani dreaming of an overwater villa. But after stepping inside Villa 29, we came away with a slightly controversial opinion: we’d choose the beach. Here’s why.
